Kererū or New Zealand pigeon is the only pigeon endemic to the New Zealand mainland. A large pigeon with distinctive noisy wingbeats. It is an important seed disperser for native trees. Kererū were a significant food source for Māori and were the food of choice for Matariki or Puanga celebrations. The design also features the New Zealand native bird Tūī. This medium-sized bird has green, blue, and bronze colouring with distinctive white throat tuft. It is seen here sitting in a Kōwhai tree.
